The NFL consists of thirty-two clubs. Each club is allowed a maximum of fifty-three players on their roster, but they may only dress forty-five to play each week during the regular season. Unlike Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League, the league has no full-time teams in Canada, although the Buffalo Bills play one game per year in Toronto. Most teams are in the eastern half of the United States; seventeen teams are in the Eastern Time Zone and nine others in the Central Time Zone.

Most major metropolitan areas in the United States have an NFL franchise, although Los Angeles, the second-largest metropolitan area in the country, has not hosted an NFL team since 1994.

The Rams and the Raiders called the Los Angeles area home from 1946–1994 and 1982–1994 respectively. In 2005, some Saints games were played in San Antonio and Baton Rouge because of Hurricane Katrina. Also, there is talk of possibly bringing the NFL to Toronto, the largest city of Canada. The most frequently mentioned team for such a move is the aforementioned Buffalo Bills, who play 90 miles (140 km) south in Buffalo, play some of their games in Toronto’s Rogers Centre, and are owned by a man now in his nineties (Ralph Wilson) who has no apparent plans to keep the team in his family upon his death.[5]

The Dallas Cowboys are the highest valued American football franchise, valued at approximately $1.6 billion[6] and one of the most valuable franchises in all of professional sports worldwide, currently second only to English soccer club Manchester United,[6] which has an approximate value of $1.8 billion at current exchange rates.[7] (Incidentally, the majority shareholder in United, Malcolm Glazer, also owns an NFL team of his own, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.)

Since the 2002 season, the teams have been aligned as follows:

In 1956, the IRFU and WIFU formed a new umbrella organization, the Canadian Football Council (CFC), and in 1958, the CFC left the CRU, becoming the Canadian Football League (The CRU remained the governing body for amateur play in Canada, eventually adopting the name Football Canada). Initially, there was no inter-divisional play between eastern (IRFU) and western (WIFU) teams except at the Grey Cup final. Limited interlocking play was introduced in 1961 and by 1981 there was a full interlocking schedule of 16 games per season. The separate histories of the IRFU and the WIFU accounted for the fact that two teams had basically the same name: the IRFU’s Ottawa Rough Riders were often called the “Eastern Riders”, while the WIFU’s Saskatchewan Roughriders were called the “Western Riders” or “Green Riders”. Other team names had unusual yet traditional origins: with rowing a national craze in the late 1800s, the Argonaut Rowing Club of Toronto formed a rugby team for its members’ off-season participation; the club name Toronto Argonauts remains to this day, and after World War II, the two teams in Hamilton—the Tigers and the Flying Wildcats—merged both their organizations and their names, forming the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

After the admission of the expansion BC Lions in Vancouver in 1954, the league remained stable with nine franchises: (BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Rough Riders, Montreal Alouettes) from its 1958 inception until 1982, when the Alouettes folded and were replaced the same year by a new franchise named the Concordes.

In 1986 the Concordes were renamed the Alouettes to attract more fan support, but the team folded the next year. The demise of the Alouettes, leaving only three teams in the East Division compared to five teams in the West Division, forced the League to alter its playoff structure by moving the easternmost Western team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, into the East Division, upsetting the long-standing tradition of “East vs. West”, as Winnipeg is not considered part of eastern Canada.

[edit] United States expansion

Main article: CFL USA

The CFL began eyeing an American expansion in 1992. In 1993, the league admitted its first United States-based franchise, the Sacramento Gold Miners. After modest success, the league then expanded further in the U.S. in 1994 with the Las Vegas Posse, Baltimore Stallions, and Shreveport Pirates. The Las Vegas franchise was an abject failure and turned into a road team by the end of the season. Baltimore, however, advanced all the way to the 82nd Grey Cup and was a financial success as well.

For the 1995 campaign, the American teams were split off into their own South Division. Las Vegas was folded, while two new teams, the Birmingham Barracudas and Memphis Mad Dogs, were added. The Sacramento team moved to become the San Antonio Texans — an ironic occurrence, since a San Antonio team was to have been admitted into the CFL along with the Gold Miners for 1993 but folded before taking a single snap. 1995 saw the Stallions become the first non-Canadian team to win the Grey Cup.

The success of the CFL’s U.S. expansion was mixed. Baltimore and San Antonio had sustainable operations and were expected to return in 1996. Memphis and Birmingham had reasonable success in 1995 but ran into severe attendance problems during college football season; Shreveport, although it had solid attendance, did not fare well on the field and suffered from poor management. By the end of the 1995 season, Shreveport and Birmingham moved out of their cities and ultimately folded, and Memphis followed suit. When Art Modell, owner of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, announced he would be moving his team to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Ravens, the Stallions moved to Montreal, becoming the revived Montreal Alouettes. San Antonio decided not to continue operations as the only American team and folded shortly thereafter. By the 1996 season, the Canadian Football League was once again based entirely in Canada.

[edit] Recent history

After three seasons that included American teams, the CFL American expansion experiment came to a close, as the CFL returned to an all-Canadian format in 1996 with nine teams; however, the Ottawa Rough Riders, in existence since 1876, folded after the 1996 season, due to poor ownership and fan support, in addition to an aging facility which no longer was suitable for providing a profitable location for professional football. In 2002, the league expanded back to nine teams with the creation of the Ottawa Renegades. After four seasons of financial losses, the Renegades were suspended indefinitely before the 2006 season; their players were absorbed by the remaining teams in a dispersal draft.

In 1997, the NFL provided a $3-million USD interest-free loan to the financially struggling CFL, as CFL teams were losing money after the failed US expansion. In return, the NFL was granted access to CFL players entering a defined two-month window in the option year of their contract. This was later written into the CFL’s collective bargaining agreement with its players. The CFL’s finances have since stabilized and they eventually repaid the loan. The CFL–NFL agreement expired in 2006. Both leagues have been attempting to reach a new agreement, however the CFL broke off negotiations after Rogers Communications paid $78-million to host eight games of the Buffalo Bills over five seasons. [12][13]

The league had struck a committee in 2003 to examine the feasibility of adding a tenth team (which has been a long-standing CFL ambition), with the leading candidate cities being Quebec City and Halifax.[14] Exhibition games were held in Quebec City in 2003[15] and in Halifax in 2005. The Halifax event, dubbed Touchdown Atlantic, was scheduled to repeat in 2006 but was cancelled after the suspension of the Ottawa Renegades franchise.[16] Commissioner Tom Wright had indicated that Halifax was the leading candidate for expansion.[17] Moncton is also pursuing a CFL team and, though the city is constructing a stadium for the World Junior Track and Field Championships, set for opening in 2010, the seating, and field itself would have to be expanded for a CFL team.[18] The mayor of Moncton, premier of New Brunswick, and league commissioner Mark Cohon met in February 2009 to negotiate a deal that would see the city host a regular season game annually over five years, beginning in the 2010 CFL season.[19]

Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium is the second-largest venue in the CFL and was the only one with a natural grass playing surface until it was replaced in 2010.

In 2005, the league set an all-time attendance record with a total attendance of more than 2.3 million.[20] With the absence of Ottawa in 2006, the league recorded total regular season attendance of 2,112,696, increasing the average per-game attendance to 29,343. This is the third highest per-game attendance of any North American sports league and the seventh highest per-game attendance of any sports league worldwide. A recent survey conducted at the University of Lethbridge confirmed that the CFL is the second most popular sports league in Canada, with the following of 19% of the total adult Canadian population compared to 30% for the NHL. The NFL had 13% following, with a total of 34% following at least one of the pro football leagues. This could be interpreted to mean that approximately 80% of Canadian football fans follow the CFL and about 55% follow the NFL.[2] The 2007 CFL season marked the sixth straight season of over two million attendance in regular season. Though slightly less than 2006, the

Watch Indianapolis Colts vs New Orleans Saints Live NFL

Super Bowl XLIV will be an American football game pitting the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Indianapolis Colts against the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New Orleans Saints to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2009 season. It will be the 40th annual championship game of the modern-era National Football League after its 1970 merger with the American Football League (AFL, 1960–1969). It will be the first time since Super Bowl XXVIII that both number one seeds will face each other in the Super Bowl. It also marks the first time that two teams who play in an indoor stadium will play each other in a Super Bowl.

The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This marks the tenth time a Super Bowl will have been played in the South Florida metropolitan area: five times the game has been held at Sun Life Stadium; the other five were played at the Orange Bowl.

Sometime around 10 o’clock tonight the battle of quarterbacks will be decided in Miami. That’s what the Super Bowl has become, a tournament of quarterbacks. Last year it was decided in the final minute by a touchdown pass thrown by Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger to close out Arizona and Kurt Warner.

I suspect Super Bowl XLIV, since we are now deep into the NFL culture as a passing league, will give us a bombastic show of air power with the two survivors of a slam-bang season, New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, dueling to the end.

It’s only fitting that the two most prolific gunslingers of the 2009 season should sort it out at the end. Overall it’s been a long time since so many Hall of Fame quarterbacks-to-be have graced the NFL stage.

I was a Hall of Fame elector for years, so I know that rarely is there such a thing as a slam-dunk candidate. Yet there have been so many great quarterbacks monopolizing the stage in the last decade that by the time they all are eligible for the Hall there may not be much room for stars at other positions. Two of them, Kurt Warner and Brett Favre, may have their five-year eligibility clocks ticking already, although you never know about Favre.

Manning is a bona fide slam dunk. His election will make up for the exclusion of his father, Archie, a Hall-caliber quarterback who lingered in football jail as a Saint, a team that did not have a winning season in its first 20 years. There was no free agency in the NFL then; that would have provided an escape hatch.

Tom Brady is probably in a similar category as Peyton. Roethlisberger and Brees are works in deep progress.

As Indianapolis worked its way toward an undefeated season, Manning began to receive praise beyond his obvious Hall of Fame credentials. When it became clear the Colts’ lineup was not brimming with major talent in several areas, that their AFC championship was pretty much due to Peyton’s greatness, people who watch pro football for a living started saying and writing “He’s the greatest quarterback of all time.”

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Vq-7w27tzc/S0k7wQ-gewI/AAAAAAAAEzQ/qiEx6GijUFU/s320/nfl+watch+now+nur+01.jpg

Manning turns 34 next month. If he can avoid injuries and the NFL doesn’t lose a season in the projected lockout for 2011, and he plays three or four more seasons, he could compile a case that he is the best of all time.

Meanwhile, I suggest those who make that claim for him now do some research on Otto Graham. Graham was the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback from 1946, when he was mustered out of the Navy, through 1955. In those years the Browns won their conference championship every season, four league championships in the All-America Conference and three NFL titles. When they entered the NFL in 1950, they were scheduled against the league’s defending champion, Philadelphia, whom they drubbed, 35-10. In their first NFL title game they defeated the Los Angeles Rams. In his final two seasons Graham quarterbacked the Browns to league championships, 56-10 over Detroit and 38-14 over the Rams.

In their first season without the retired Graham, 1956, the Browns finished fifth, winning just five games and losing seven. As Manning will discover once again this evening, it’s all about winning.

This Super Bowl weekend, whether you are rooting for the New Orleans Saints or that other team, there is a dog pile of apps to enhance the game, although I will acknowledge not as many as I would like for some handsets.

The Super Bowl app yardage leader is the iPhone. The iTunes app store offers the official NFL Superbowl Program, formatted for your phone, for $4.99. There is a $1.99 Saints-focused WhoDatApp, which has a roster and player data, Twitter updates from Saints players (I wouldn’t count on a lot of Tweets during a game), and an archive of Bobby and Deke sports talk radio shows, although you need a Wi-Fi connection for audio.

There is an Indianapolis-specific app for $1.99, with a schedule, roster and statistics. The free ESPN ScoreCenter app also offers game statistics as well as scoring alerts, just in case you are momentarily distracted by the barbecue. If you need to get out of the house, the free Fan Finder app will help pinpoint sports bars near you.

The Android market is a little skimpy. There are some all-news apps, some fantasy football apps, but I found just one specific Super Bowl app. Tt is the $1.39 Cajun Super Bowl language quiz, which lets you look up words you might hear from fans cheering the Saints in a N’awlins patois.

The BlackBerry market is equally thin, with no specific Super Bowl apps that I could see. The best I could do was to find team themes for your phone at $5.99 each. Oddly, the description of the Saints theme pack cites the helmet’s “lucky blue horseshoe.”

LeBeau, 72, the oldest player selected, has one of the more intriguing story lines. His career began in 1959, before the establishment of the American Football League and almost a decade before the first Super Bowl.

In 14 seasons with the Lions, LeBeau intercepted 62 passes, third on the career list among cornerbacks.

Although LeBeau’s election is officially based on his playing career and not his coaching, he has maintained widespread visibility as a successful defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Among the innovations LeBeau perfected as a coach was the zone blitz, which confuses blockers by rushing some players, like linebackers, while dropping others, like linemen, unexpectedly into pass coverage.

As a young player, LeBeau was vividly sketched in “Paper Lion,” George Plimpton’s 1966 book about training camp with the Lions in 1963. Plimpton portrayed him as a musical man, strumming a guitar in the dormitory.

The other three inducted among the modern-era finalists were Russ Grimm, part of the Washington Redskins’ offensive line of the 1980s that was known as the Hogs; Rickey Jackson, a linebacker primarily with the New Orleans Saints who played 15 seasons in the N.F.L.; and John Randle, a defensive end who spent most of his 14-year career with the Minnesota Vikings.

Also inducted were two senior nominees, Floyd Little, a running back who played nine seasons for the Denver Broncos, and Dick LeBeau, a cornerback with the Detroit Lions.

The union requested the meeting before the full owners meeting. Such owners meetings just before the Super Bowl are highly unusual, but the N.F.L. is one year from a possible work stoppage.

The negotiating session probably had a very different dynamic than previous ones because owners and players rarely attend sessions in great numbers, leaving the early stage of negotiations to lawyers. Among the players present was Kevin Mawae, the union president.

At a news conference Thursday, Smith said he thought the chances of a lockout were a 14 on a scale of 1 to 10. A day later, Goodell sounded more hopeful that a deal would be completed within the year. But three weeks ago the Giants co-owner John Mara said that there had been no progress in negotiations and that he was resigned to an uncapped season.

NFL Superbowl XLIV
United States
