Paramount+ has set premiere dates for June, a new feature doc on country singer-songwriter June Carter Cash from Emmy winner Kristen Vaurio, one of the producers behind the acclaimed Alex Gibney pic Going Clear: Scientology & The Prison of Belief. Set to debut in the U.S. and Canada on January 16, the film will debut one day later in territories including the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
The news come ahead of June‘s DOC NYC Festival world premiere, which is set for November 12.
A five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, comedian, musician, actor and author, Carter Cash’s remarkable career saw her open for Elvis, appear onscreen with Robert Duvall and Jane Seymour, and co-write one of the most recognizable country songs of all time, in “Ring of Fire.” While she’s perhaps at time been overshadowed by her iconic husband Johnny Cash, in this film, she takes center stage.
Before diving into the complex life of Carter Cash, the film shines a spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre. Showcasing rare and never-before-seen archival material, the film also features interviews with Carter Cash, as well as family, admirers, and friends including Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson.
Per Carlene Carter, Carter Cash’s oldest daughter, the doc “offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age – decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash.’ Steeped in the legacy of the Carter Family and as a solo artist, she always was – and, as seen through this film – always will remain a shining star in her own right.”
Carlene went on to say that “while some may not fully be aware of her many talents, influence and just how much she mattered as an entertainer, this lovely documentary offers clear insight for everyone to see the true character and the joy shared.”
Hailing from Sandbox Productions, Sony Music Entertainment, and Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television, June is produced by Jason Owen and Josh Matas for Sandbox Productions, Mary Robertson for Maxine Productions, Sarah Olson, and Vaurio. Exec producers are Tom Mackay and Krista Wegener for Sony Music Entertainment, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman for Sony Pictures Television, Jean Song and Chandra LaPlume for Sandbox Productions, John Carter Cash, and Carlene Carter.
In a statement today, Vaurio shared that she’s “so honored to have had the opportunity to work with Sandbox Productions, Sony Music Entertainment and Maxine Productions to shine a spotlight on June. She’s a woman whom many people are aware of, but few know much about her remarkable life and her deep contributions to country music. We’re thrilled to work with our amazing partners at Paramount+ to bring her into the spotlight, where she belongs.”
Remarked John Carter Cash, the only son of June and Johnny Cash, “I am thrilled to share the full story of my mother’s life with the world. Thank you to Sony Music Entertainment and Sandbox Productions for finding a place for it to live and to Paramount+ for giving it a home.”
